What Intimacy Really Means (And Why It’s Not Just About Sex)
When people talk about the word intimacy, they often think of sex and the physical aspect.
But true intimacy? It runs much than that. (dont get me wrong physical touch is a human basic need so we do need that)
It’s about connection. Feeling seen. Feeling safe. Feeling wanted—not just physically, but emotionally too.
And here’s something to think about: you can be having sex and still feel completely disconnected.
So, What Is Intimacy?
Intimacy is the closeness you feel with someone when you can truly trust them and be yourself—without pressure, without pretending. (I'm not talking about role playing here)
It shows up in different ways:
- Emotional intimacy (being open and vulnerable)
- Physical intimacy (touch, affection, sex)
- Mental intimacy (shared thoughts, ideas, conversations)
- Sensual intimacy (pleasure, exploration, feeling good in your body)
When one of these areas is missing, it can feel like something’s “off”… even if you can’t quite explain why.
Why Intimacy Fades.
Life gets busy. Stress builds. You're not communicating how you once did. Bodies change. Hormones shift.
And suddenly:
- You’re too tired
- You feel disconnected from your body
- You stop prioritising time together
- Intimacy starts to feel like “just another thing on the to-do list”
- Or you feel like they want something from you.
For many women, especially through midlife, this can also come with:
- Vaginal dryness or discomfort
- Lower desire
- Feeling less confident in their body
None of this means intimacy is over—it just means your style of intimacy needs some tweaks.
A Big Myth About Intimacy
That it should just “happen naturally.” Its more about being intentional and finding ways to connect, physically, emotionally and intellectually
In long-term relationships, people change, bodies change, desires change so intimacy is something you create, not something that magically stays the same.
And often, it starts outside the bedroom.
Simple Ways to Rebuild Intimacy
You don’t need a complete relationship overhaul. Small shifts make a big difference.
1. Start with connection, not pressure
A hug. Sitting close. Holding hands. Cuddling. Providing affection in nurturing ways. These rebuild safety and closeness. Remember to have fun and laugh together too.
2. Talk about what you actually need
Not what you think you should want—but what feels good for you now. This is about trusting each other with our vulnerabilities and desires.
3. Get comfortable with your own body again
If you feel disconnected from yourself (especially if you are experiencing hormonal changes or stressed, it’s hard to feel connected with someone else.
4. Make pleasure easier, not harder
Sometimes intimacy fades because it’s uncomfortable or frustrating. Your body may have changed and doesnt respond how it once did.
This is where support tools can help—like a good quality lubricant or arousal product to:
- Help your body respond more easily and giving you more confidence
- Reduce discomfort
- Increase sensitivity
- Try massage as a non sexual way of touch that can help build a greater connection
It may sound unromantic, but schedule time for the two of you to get together so you can focus on each other. There’s no shame in making things feel better.
Intimacy Isn’t About Perfection
There is no such thing as a “perfect” sex life. Its the life you create that is perfect for you and your partner. What is something different that you could try that will increase your intimacy?
It’s about feeling close, connected, and confident in your body again.
Dont compare what you have heard what others do as intimacy looks different for everyone.
